About HSSSE & MGSSE

What is student engagement?

Student engagement can be thought of as that crucial link between students’ experience in school and their learning, and is a critical part of improving student outcomes. HSSSE and MGSSE’s three Dimensions of Engagement serve as a framework for understanding three core areas of student engagement.

Survey design

HSSSE and MGSSE contain parallel survey items. The surveys were developed based on research on student engagement, and particularly, how students engage in middle and high school learning environments. The majority of survey items are structured around the Dimensions of Engagement framework, which focuses on some of the most enduring and researched areas of student engagement:

     Cognitive

        Social

    Emotional

Additional items help to understand students’ engagement with different classroom activities, how they spend their time outside of school, and more. Both surveys are available as an online or paper survey instrument, and most students complete the survey in 15–20 minutes.

Valid and reliable data

The surveys provide schools with credible data they can trust about student engagement and are backed up by rigorous validity and reliability evidence.
